So, the internet being what it is, I see a lot of hypotheses on certain aspects of Labyrinth's backstory.
Or, rather, I see the same hypothesis popping up in myriad forms. You know the one, Sarah is the latest in a long line of Sarahs because Jareth is a lunatic who keeps going after girls with the same name because he has some bullshit tragic past involving a girl named Sarah.
After all, everyone acts like they expected Sarah, so surely this has happened before, right? No.
Let's apply Occam's Razor here, and come up with a much less complicated reason nobody's surprised she's here.
At the beginning of the film, the goblins are all set to kidnap Toby. Now, think about it: why are they waiting for her to say such a specific combination of words? Clearly, they know that she knows the story of the Goblin King.
Now, think about it: your king is plotting to steal a child to make his heir and get a particular girl to love him, and has likely talked about it with the goblins that hang around the castle.
Well, such juicy gossip can't be kept quiet, now can it? They likely spread the word around, and if Jareth mentioned her by name…
You see what I'm getting at? The goblins knew her name because Jareth talked about her.
Isn't that so much simpler than what tumblr and the like loved spewing back in the day (or I guess "right now", for my 21st century audience)?
As for why he's so obsessed over her? Who fucking knows. He's a fae, it's entirely possible even he doesn't know his exact motivations.
